Beginner Training Course

Course Duration:
4 days

Course Outline:
Suitable for all new drivers or for drivers with little or no experience or who have no certification, at the end of this course they will receive a certificate provided they achieve the required standard in both the practical and theoretical tests.

Who should attend?
New driver's with little or no experience and no certification.

Course Objectives
On completion of the course participants will be able to demonstrate safe operating skills and avoid danger to people and property.

Methods of training
This course is based on classroom methods and practical lessons on forklift training

Safety appreciation and legislation

Theoretical Training
• Operators safety code
• Daily inspections
• Hydraulic systems
• Operating practices
• Video on safe fork lift operation
• Written test
• Feedback

Practical Training
• Introduction to the lift truck
• Controls and instruments
• Daily inspection, take over and maintenance
• Starting, stopping and steering
• Simple corners and manoeuvring
• Handling pallets
• Manoeuvring in confined space/ shills test

Pre-course Requirements
NB - Candidates must bring along their safety shoes for the full duration of the course.

English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language.

Assessment/Certification
Participants complete a theoretical and practical exam. On successful completion of the exam participants are awarded a forklift operators certificate.

Experienced Driver Training Course

Course Duration:
2 days.

Course Outline:
This two day course is designed for experienced operators who do not hold a certificate.  A certificate is awarded to participants at the end of the course, provided they achieve the required standard in the practical and theoretical tests.

Who should attend?
Experienced operators who are familiar with the steering characteristics of the truck and have the ability to manoeuvre both forward and in reverse in a confined area. They should also have experience in load handling functions.

Course Objectives
On completion of the course participants will be able to operate a forklift truck safely, apply safe working habits, understand the dangers of taking risks, load and unload safely, refuel/ recharge forklifts safely, handle awkward loads;  all the above will assist to  reduce the risk of injury to operatives and pedestrians.

Course Programme
Safety appreciation and legislation

• Introduction to the course
• Introduction to the truck
• Safe operating practices and safe video
• Elementary driving
• Explanation, demonstration and guided practical in the correct procedures to adopt when driving a forklift truck

Pre-course Requirements
Operators must have at least one year’s recent experience operating a lift truck and /or hold a Forklift Operators Certificate which has expired.

NB - Candidates must bring along their safety shoes for the full duration of the course.

English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language.

Refresher Training Course

Course Duration:
1 day

Course Outline:
Regular refresher training is recommended to keep Forklift Truck operators safe and to sharpen operator techniques. This one-day course is suitable for experienced operators who require a refresher course.

Who should attend?
Certified Drivers who have had adequate basic training should consider attendance at this course. They should have previously been certified but now require their skills to be updated, due to long intervals of time between operating lift trucks, or changes in work practices have occurred, or there is evidence of deterioration in operating performance.

Course Objectives
On completion of the course participants will be able to:

• List key features of relevant legislation
• Display sharpened operating skills
• Rectify bad habits
• Reinforce safe practice

Course Programme
Safety appreciation and legislation

• Video on safe forklift operation
• Operator safety
• Operating practice
• Daily inspection
• Engineering principles
• Written test (questionnaire)
• Practical competence

Operators must hold a Valid Forklift Operators Certificate.

NB - Candidates must bring along their safety shoes for the full duration of the course.

English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language.

**Certificates are valid for three years and must be refreshed before that time is up.

Conversion Training Course

Course Duration:
Half day training.

Course Details
Conversion training is required to enable operators to extend the range of trucks they are qualified to drive.   Refresher and Conversion training should be approached with the same attention to detail as basic training to ensure that all the gaps in variants on existing skills and knowledge are identified and covered during training.  For instance there may be significant variations in configurations or applications of controls, even in the same truck types.

Who should attend?
Drivers with certification for one truck type i.e. Counterbalance or Reach trucks that are now required to operate the other type.

Course Objectives
On completion of the course participants will be able to:

• Operate the lift truck safely
• Apply safe operating habits
• Explain the difference between the two truck types
• Load and unload safely
• Handle awkward loads

Course Programme

• Elementary driving
• Explanation, demonstration and guided practice in the correct procedures to adopt when operating the forklift 
• Checking the truck
• Correct operating procedures
• Safe working loads
• Practical competence testing
