HYSTER Europe is owned by the NACCO Materials Handling Group Inc. (NMHG), a global organisation based in Cleveland, Ohio embracing coal production, kitchen equipment and household products. HYSTER began supplying materials handling equipment in 1929, when it began making winches, logging arches and lumber carriers for the North American Timber Industry. The HYSTER name is derived from the logging foreman's instruction to his winch operator to "Hoist' err".

The Craigavon facility, in Co. Armagh, was opened in 1981 and is one of the most up-to-date lift truck manufacturing facilities in the world. The plant employs around 800 people and is capable of producing over 100 trucks per day, including the best selling H1.50-2.00XMS and H2.00-3.20XM lift truck series.
